Synopsis
The River at Green Knowe, published in 1959, is the third book in Lucy M. Boston's Green Knowe series, and departs from the earlier books by setting aside both Tolly and Mrs. Oldknow. Instead, the old house is let for the summer to the archaeologist Doctor Maud Biggin and her companion Miss Sybilla Bun, who invite Biggin's niece Ida along with two refugee children, Oskar and Ping, to stay with them. Left largely free to explore, the three children spend their holiday out on the surrounding river and canals by canoe, and their adventures grow increasingly strange as they encounter flying horses, come across a giant, and stumble upon what appears to be a Bronze Age ceremony tied to the moon. Beneath the fantastical incidents runs a quieter thread about displaced children finding safety and healing in the presence of Green Knowe.
