Synopsis

A Stranger at Green Knowe, published in 1961, is the fourth book in Lucy M. Boston's Green Knowe series. Tolly and his friend Ping both stay at the old house together, where Mrs. Oldknow tells them of Doctor Vogel, a tutor and necromancer who lived and died at Green Knowe centuries earlier and whose dark reputation still clings to the place. Into this setting arrives Professor Melanie D. Powers, a modern-day occultist who comes to Green Knowe under a friendly pretext but is in fact searching for Vogel's old papers for her own sinister purposes. As Powers' true intentions become clearer, her presence sets off a quiet but escalating confrontation between the protective, benevolent forces long associated with Green Knowe and the darker power she represents, with Tolly and Ping caught in the middle of it.
