Synopsis

An Enemy at Green Knowe is the fifth novel in Lucy M. Boston's Green Knowe series, set once again at the ancient house of Green Knowe, home to Mrs. Oldknow and her young visitors Tolly and Ping. Mrs. Oldknow tells the children of Doctor Vogel, a tutor and necromancer who came to a diabolical end at the house centuries earlier, and whose occult papers are said to remain hidden somewhere on the property. Into this history steps Professor Melanie D. Powers, an unsettling newcomer who arrives ostensibly as a scholar but is in fact hunting for Vogel's forbidden manuscripts and the power they promise. As her true intentions become apparent, Tolly and Ping find themselves drawn into a mounting confrontation between the protective, benevolent magic long associated with Green Knowe and the malevolent forces Powers represents, testing the house's old defenses against a determined new enemy.
