Synopsis
This 1993 collection gathers five interconnected stories set on Pern, spanning the period from before humans arrive through the difficult early years of settlement, centered on the world's First Pass of the deadly organism called Thread. In the earliest story, Federation scouts survey the planet and recommend it for colonization. Later tales follow Captain Jim Tillek leading an evacuation northward with the help of dolphin partners ahead of a volcanic eruption, animal husbandman Red Hanrahan founding a new settlement across a treacherous river crossing, and young queen dragonrider Torene helping establish additional dragon-human communities, including the distant Benden Weyr. The collection closes years after the First Pass ends, when a Federation rescue team investigates an old distress signal and the colonists must decide how much of their survival and way of life to reveal.
