Synopsis
Nahri is a talented con woman and orphan surviving by her wits in eighteenth-century Cairo, secretly possessing magical healing abilities she has learned to hide from the people around her. When she accidentally summons a djinn warrior named Dara during a ritual meant only as a scam, he recognizes her powers as belonging to the Nahids, an ancient and nearly extinct magical family of healers, and insists on escorting her to the legendary hidden city of Daevabad. There Nahri is drawn into a web of political intrigue among rival djinn tribes still divided by an ancient war, forced to navigate a court where her very bloodline makes her both a valuable pawn and a genuine threat to those in power.
