S.A. Chakraborty was born on December 7, 1985, in New Jersey and raised by Catholic parents, converting to Islam as a teenager. She originally planned to become a historian specializing in the Middle East, but her academic plans shifted after the 2008 financial crisis, and while working to support herself and her husband she began writing what she has described as historical fan fiction, which eventually grew into her debut novel. She is best known for the Daevabad Trilogy, comprising The City of Brass (2017), The Kingdom of Copper (2019), and The Empire of Gold (2020), followed by the companion collection The River of Silver: Tales From the Daevabad Trilogy (2022); the trilogy was optioned for a Netflix adaptation in 2020. Her debut novel received nominations for the Crawford Award, the Compton Crook Award, the Locus Award, the British Fantasy Award, and the World Fantasy Award, and she was a finalist for the John W. Campbell Award in 2019. Her 2023 novel The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi reached the New York Times fiction list, and its audiobook was selected for the 2024 RUSA Listen List.
