Overview
A historical fantasy series by S.A. Chakraborty set roughly a thousand years before her Daevabad Trilogy, in the 12th-century Indian Ocean world of Muslim seafaring trade. Its first novel, The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi (2023), introduces the retired pirate captain Amina al-Sirafi, coaxed out of retirement when a wealthy woman asks for help rescuing her missing granddaughter. Amina reassembles her old crew to pursue a mysterious artifact known as the Moon of Saba, sailing across the Indian Ocean and the island of Socotra while confronting supernatural forces and her own demonic ex-husband. Told with a framing device presenting it as Amina's dictated memoir, the book blends swashbuckling adventure with folklore drawn from Islamicate legend and history rather than the Western fantasy tradition. It was a finalist for the 2024 Hugo Award for Best Novel and received starred reviews for its blend of pulpy adventure and character-driven depth, cementing Chakraborty's reputation beyond the Daevabad books.
