Overview
A comic, mythic detective fantasy set in "a China that never was," following the wine-loving, morally flexible sage Master Li and his devoted young assistant Number Ten Ox as they untangle mysteries rooted in ancient myth and folk legend. In the opening novel, Bridge of Birds (1984), Number Ten Ox leaves his home village to find help after its children fall into a mysterious plague-induced coma, and returns with Master Li, whose investigation into a cure for the "Ginseng plague" unfolds into a quest for the Great Root of Power that turns out to be entangled with an ancient love story involving the Princess of Birds and the tyrannical Duke of Ch'in. Barry Hughart's blend of genuine Chinese folklore, classical detective-story structure and broad comic invention won the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 1985, shared that year with Robert Holdstock's Mythago Wood, and the novel remains widely regarded as a genre landmark for its fusion of mystery plotting with fantastical, myth-steeped worldbuilding outside the usual European mold.
