Overview
Rebecca Ross's Elements of Cadence is a completed Scottish-folklore-inspired duology about a bard sent to an enchanted island to investigate a string of disappearances tied to feuding elemental spirits. In A River Enchanted (2022), Jack Tamerlaine, a musician summoned home after a decade away, is paired with Adaira, the laird's daughter he grew up alongside and grew apart from, to find the island's missing girls before the island's own spirits, tied to the elements of earth, air, fire, and water, take more. A Fire Endless (2023) continues directly afterward, widening the story to the war brewing between the island's rival clans and the spirits themselves. Ross, previously known for the Elements of Cadence's sister duology Divine Rivals, builds the world around a folkloric magic system in which music, oaths, and the four elements are treated as literal, binding forces, and the two books together form a complete, self-contained story rather than an open-ended series.
