Synopsis
The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi opens with its title character living in quiet retirement on the Indian Ocean coast in the twelfth century, having left behind her old life as a notorious pirate captain in order to raise her young daughter, Marjana, away from danger. That peace is broken when an elderly noblewoman named Salima seeks her out with an offer she cannot refuse: find and rescue her missing granddaughter, Dunya, who disappeared after falling in with a Frankish occultist. To take the job, Amina must reassemble her old crew, including the poisoner Dalila, first mate Tinbu and navigator Majed, and ready her ship, the Marawati, for one more voyage. Their search for Dunya soon proves stranger and more dangerous than expected, tangled up with legends of a powerful relic and forces that reach well beyond the ordinary criminal underworld Amina used to know.
