Synopsis
In the second Powder Mage novel, Field Marshal Tamas and his army are cut off deep behind enemy lines in Kez territory after a bold offensive goes wrong, forced to fight their way home through hostile country with dwindling supplies and no reinforcements in sight. Back in Adro, the new republic's leadership struggles to hold together as foreign powers and internal rivals sense weakness, while Taniel Two-Shot confronts new threats to the powder mage corps and the fragile peace his father's coup created. Inspector Adamat, meanwhile, pursues an investigation into political intrigue at the highest levels of the fledgling government even as the war effort strains every institution the revolution built.
