Synopsis
Fourteen-year-old Kayla Jones is at the Minnesota State Fair when she learns that she is the daughter of a Dark Lord who has died. An armored man named Waylan invites her to take her father's throne as Dark Lady and rebuild the Dark armies. Before she answers, she, her brother Del and her mother are carried to the kingdom of Zaradwin, a land of magic with no technology, and arrive at a cursed, crumbling castle. Kayla wants only to go home, but she can do so only by learning magic. The Dark magic comes with traditions she finds horrifying, such as exile, kidnapping and execution. Her tablet computer has become her magical familiar. She must decide whether to accept her inheritance or become a new kind of Dark Lady.
