Patricia Collins Wrede was born March 27, 1953, in Chicago, Illinois, the eldest of five siblings, and was an avid reader as a child who began writing in the seventh grade with strong encouragement from her parents. She earned a BA in biology from Carleton College in 1974 and an MBA from the University of Minnesota in 1977, working as an accountant and financial analyst while completing her first novel in 1978. She sold that debut to Ace Publishers in April 1980, with the book appearing in 1982, and became a full-time writer in 1985. In 1980 she was a founding member of The Scribblies, an influential Minneapolis-area writers' group that also included Steven Brust and Emma Bull. Wrede is best known for the Enchanted Forest Chronicles, a comic high-fantasy series that has been voted among NPR's 100 Best-Ever Teen Novels, beginning with Dealing with Dragons. She also wrote a series of interconnected Lyra novels (1982-1997), the Mairelon series co-written with Caroline Stevermer, the Frontier Magic trilogy (2009-2012), and several Star Wars junior novelizations (1999-2005). She was married to James Wrede from 1976 to 1991. A pescatarian who lives in the Twin Cities with two cats, she donated her literary archive to Northern Illinois University's Rare Books collection in 2009.
