Synopsis
Set before the events of the earlier volume The Blacktongue Thief, this prequel follows Galva as a young woman defying her family to enlist in the Raven Knights, an experimental military unit built around giant corvids raised and bonded through dark magic, at a time when goblin armies have already overrun cities, destroyed harvests and worn down human forces on multiple fronts. Leaving her family and the safety of home behind despite their objections, Galva trains alongside her fellow knights as the unit prepares to march on a city that has fallen to the goblins, its war-birds intended as a decisive, if unpredictable, weapon against an enemy that vastly outnumbers them. The novel follows Galva's early experience of command, loyalty and combat as the Raven Knights advance toward a confrontation that will test both their strange magic and their nerve.
