Synopsis
Jim Eckert, now firmly established as Baron James of Malencontri in an alternate fourteenth-century England where magic genuinely works, and still able to shift into dragon form when the need arises, faces two dangers that gradually converge. On the human side, the Earl of Cumberland marshals a substantial army to march against Jim's lands, while in the drowned Arthurian realm of Lyonesse, King Arthur and his knights come under threat from the malevolent Dark Powers that rule that sunken land alongside the older forces of Old Magic, the trees, and the beasts. Supported as always by loyal companions such as Sir Brian Neville-Smythe, the hobgoblin Hob, and a magical questing beast, Jim must draw on everything he has learned of magic and shapeshifting to prevail against both the earl's forces and the darkness threatening Lyonesse.
