Synopsis

The second book in the trilogy opens in the aftermath of the war against the Federation of Mugen, with shaman-warrior Rin on the run and struggling with opium addiction as she nurses a private intention to assassinate the Nikara Empress she blames for the empire's suffering. Before she can act on that plan, Rin is captured by Yin Vaisra, a warlord known as the Dragon Warlord who commands the Dragon Republic and has ambitions of his own to remake Nikan's government. Drawn into his campaign rather than pursuing her own agenda, Rin must decide how far to commit herself to Vaisra's cause while wrestling with the psychological toll of the war she has already survived and the volatile power of the Phoenix still within her.
