Synopsis
In 1529 Brian Duffy, a world-weary Irish soldier of fortune, has to leave Venice in a hurry and accepts an odd offer from an old man who calls himself Aurelianus Ambrosius: a job as the bouncer at an inn in Vienna where the famous Herzwesten beer is brewed. On the journey through the Alps he is attacked and protected by creatures out of myth, and he reaches Vienna just as the Turkish armies of Suleiman begin their siege. Duffy slowly realises that his presence is no accident, that the brewery guards something on which the survival of the West depends, and that he himself may be the latest form of a legendary king.
