Tim Powers is an American science fiction and fantasy author born February 29, 1952, in Buffalo, New York; his family relocated to California in 1959. He earned a B.A. in English Literature from California State University, Fullerton in 1976, where he formed lasting friendships and creative collaborations with fellow writers James Blaylock and K. W. Jeter. Powers writes secret-history novels that weave real historical events and figures with supernatural conspiracy, a style sometimes labeled 'historical fantasy.' His debut novel was The Drawing of the Dark (1979), but his breakthrough came with The Anubis Gates (1983), a time-travel fantasy set in Regency London. His novel On Stranger Tides (1987), concerning pirates and voodoo in the Caribbean, later influenced both a video game franchise and the film Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Other major works include Last Call (1992), Expiration Date, Earthquake Weather, Declare (2001), and Three Days to Never. He has won two World Fantasy Awards, for Last Call and Declare, the Philip K. Dick Award for The Anubis Gates and Dinner at Deviant's Palace, the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award, and multiple Locus Awards. Powers currently teaches creative writing at institutions including Chapman University and the Orange County High School of the Arts, and lives in Muscoy, California, with his wife Serena Batsford Powers.
