Synopsis

The Emperor of Nihon-Ja continues the Ranger's Apprentice series as Horace and the scribe George travel to the distant kingdom of Nihon-Ja to deliver a diplomatic message, only to arrive amid a coup attempt against the ruling Emperor. Drawn into the conflict, Horace agrees to help the Emperor's loyal forces as they retreat toward a legendary mountain fortress, hoping to regroup and hold out against the rebels pursuing them. Meanwhile, word of Horace and George's predicament reaches their companions in Araluen, who set out across the sea in a race to reach Nihon-Ja before the situation there grows any more dire. As Horace adapts to Nihon-Ja's unfamiliar customs, weapons, and warfare while helping to defend the Emperor's position, the rest of the group presses to close the distance, uncertain whether they can arrive in time to make a difference.
