Synopsis

Two years after the events of Obernewtyn, the mountain compound has become a thriving secret community of Misfits, organised into guilds by talent, with Rushton as its legal owner and the Council believing it destroyed in a firestorm. Elspeth Gordie, now guildmistress of the Farseekers, leads a small expedition to the lowland town of Rangorn to rescue a powerful young Misfit before the Herder Faction finds him, and a prophecy warns that the party must include the boy Jik and must return before the mountain pass closes for the winter, or Obernewtyn will fall. The journey takes them through the White Valley, the camp of the Druid's rebel band and the haunted Tor mountain, and teaches Elspeth more about the Beforetime, about the quest that is hers alone, and about the danger of the Druid, who wants Obernewtyn's powers for his own war.
