Synopsis
The Firelings live on the edge of Belcher, a volcano that their legends describe as a clumsy sky-creature who fell into a sea of brine and still burns inside. Long ago the Firelings fed Belcher victims through a passage called the Long Slip, and the sacrifices have stopped for many years. Now the volcano begins to grumble, and some of the Firelings start whispering that another victim must be sent. The younger Firelings, who do not remember the last sacrifice, are determined it will not happen again, and some of the older ones refuse to be bullied. The people must either feed the volcano or flee by a hidden route known as the Secret Way of the Goat.
