Synopsis

The Forests of Silence is the first book in Emily Rodda's eight-volume Deltora Quest series, published in 2000. Sixteen years after the Shadow Lord conquered the kingdom of Deltora by stealing the seven gems from the magical Belt of Deltora, Lief, the son of the blacksmith Jarred and his wife Anna, learns on his sixteenth birthday of his father's long-concealed plan to recover the stolen gems and restore the Belt's power. Because Jarred is too badly injured to make the journey himself, he sends Lief in his place, accompanied by Barda, a former palace guard who has spent sixteen years disguised as a beggar gathering intelligence while waiting for this moment.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series Deltora Quest: position 1 of 8: next The Lake of Tears (2000)
  • Internal chronology, within Deltora Quest: position 1 of 15: next The Lake of Tears (2000)
