Synopsis
Yaz and her companions have escaped the caverns of the Broken, but only into the hands of the priests of the Black Rock, the mountain that rises through the ice above the Pit, who keep the regulator's secrets and the Missing's children for purposes of their own. Confronting the priests costs the group dearly, and what they learn there sends them out onto the open ice on the longest journey any of them has made: the trek across the frozen world toward the Corridor, the narrow band of green around Abeth's equator that the tribes know only as a myth. The second book carries Yaz off the ice at last, and in its final chapters her story reaches the Convent of Sweet Mercy and intersects directly, for the first time, with the Book of the Ancestor.
