Synopsis
On Abeth, a world almost entirely buried under ice, the tribes that survive on the frozen surface have a hard rule: a child who is not strong enough, who shows the wrong signs, is thrown into the Pit of the Missing by the regulator at the annual gathering, and never seen again. Yaz, sixteen, of the Ictha, knows that she is such a child, and when her younger brother is the one thrown in instead, she jumps after him. Beneath the ice she finds not death but the Broken, a society of the discarded living in caverns around the heat of the planet's buried past, hunted by the mutated hunters the ice has made, ruled by factions, and warmed by the relics of the civilisation that built the ancient cities under the ice. The first book of the trilogy, almost entirely under the ice.
