Synopsis
The Girl in the Tower, the second Winternight novel, picks up with Vasilisa Petrovna having been driven from her home and denounced as a witch after the events that saved her village with the aid of the frost-demon Morozko. Facing a future limited to marriage or the convent, the only choices considered acceptable for a woman in her position, Vasya instead disguises herself as a boy and sets off on horseback with her magical horse to see more of the world than either fate would allow. Her travels bring her into contact with her siblings in Moscow, her brother Sasha, a warrior monk, and her sister Olga, a princess, as well as Olga's daughter Marya, who appears to share Vasya's own rare gift, while Morozko continues to watch over her from the edges of her journey.
