Synopsis

This third volume of the Winternight trilogy opens in medieval Rus after Moscow has survived both fire and a siege, with a golden bridle tied to the mythical Firebird recovered from the ruins. Vasilisa "Vasya," a young noblewoman with the rare gift of seeing spirits invisible to others, becomes the target of the priest Konstantin, who stirs a mob into accusing her of witchcraft and of setting the city ablaze. Forced to flee her home, Vasya is pursued into the wilderness and eventually falls into the hands of the Grand Prince of Moscow. Her fate becomes bound to Morozko, the frost-demon and death-god whose power is waning, and to his chaos-bringing twin Medved, as an old quarrel among immortal beings threatens to engulf the human world along with the supernatural one.
