Synopsis

Maia, the youngest son of the Elflands' Emperor, has spent his life in exile at a remote estate, raised by an abusive cousin far from the intrigues of the Imperial Court, on account of his mixed elvish and goblin parentage. When his father and his three older half-brothers, all ahead of him in the line of succession, are killed together in an airship accident, Maia is suddenly and unexpectedly elevated to the throne. Arriving at court with no training in politics, no allies, and no experience of the elaborate customs and factions surrounding him, he must find his footing as emperor while navigating a web of courtiers, advisors, and rivals whose loyalties and motives he cannot yet read, all while confronting the loss of the private life he has always known.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
