Synopsis
At the western edge of the world, where land is still unfinished and time and space behave oddly, two powers fight a war with no end. The Line worships machines and builds railways and factories; the Gun glorifies violence and works through agents bound to demonic weapons. Colonists push west, displacing the magic-using Hillfolk. Liv Alverhuysen, a psychologist, treats people broken by the Line's noise weapons and tries to stay out of the fighting. Then a Gun agent kidnaps her and her patient, a General whose damaged mind holds a secret that could threaten the gods of both factions. With Line forces in pursuit, they flee into the unfinished lands beyond the frontier.
