Synopsis
Harry Ransom is a snake-oil salesman and self-taught inventor who drifts through the towns of the western frontier, raising money to perfect the Ransom Process, a device he believes will give everyone free light and power. His episodic adventures take him across the same war-torn land shaped by the Line, which spreads industry and control, and the Gun, which spreads violence and robbery, and among the free settlements and the magic-using Folk who survive in the West. Along the way he briefly crosses paths with the psychologist Liv Alverhuysen and the renegade Gun agent John Creedmoor. The story is Ransom's own account of how his invention and his reputation grew.
