Synopsis

The third novel in the World of the Five Gods series centers on Lord Ingrey kin Wolfcliff, a disgraced and landless nobleman summoned into service as the dying Hallow King's health fails. Ingrey is ordered to escort Lady Ijada, an heiress accused of killing one of the king's sons, to the capital to face trial. Both Ingrey and Ijada secretly carry forbidden animal spirits, his a wolf and hers a leopard acquired through the same botched ritual that led to the killing, and as they travel together Ingrey finds himself torn between growing feelings for Ijada and an inexplicable compulsion to kill her. Their journey draws them toward the mysterious Lord Wencel and toward long-buried truths about the kingdom's conquered, pre-Chalion past.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
