16 novellas (2015-2026); publication order diverges from the author's own stated internal chronological order (recorded via internal chronology). Set roughly 150 years after The Hallowed Hunt and roughly 100 years before the Chalion novels. Classified Core Canon (not Expanded) because the novellas are marketed/sold as their own numbered series, are narratively load-bearing rather than side content, and the Hugo voting body treated them as full constituent parts of the universe when awarding the 2018 Hugo Best Series to the whole World of the Five Gods.

Rule: New universe, Lois McMaster Bujold's World of the Five Gods. Core = 3 novels (Curse of Chalion, Paladin of Souls, The Hallowed Hunt) + 16 Penric & Desdemona novellas (2015-2026) = 19 works. The Penric novellas are included in Core Canon (not Expanded) despite the format difference from the 3 novels; they are marketed as their own numbered series, are narratively load-bearing (they occupy the entire middle era of the setting and introduce core worldbuilding), and the 2018 Hugo Best Series award was made to the whole universe including them. Precedent for mixed-format Core Canon within one universe already exists (The Witcher). Internal chronology diverges sharply from publication order at both the macro level (Hallowed Hunt is earliest despite being published 3rd; the Chalion novels are chronologically last despite being published first) and within the Penric novellas themselves (e.g. Testimony of Mute Things, published 2025, is chronologically the 4th story). The Nebula Award for Paladin of Souls is officially dated 2004 by SFWA's own site; some secondary aggregators mislabel it 2005.
