Synopsis

In the sixth Peter Grant novel, Peter is at the home of his girlfriend, the river goddess Beverley Brook, when he is called to a luxury apartment party where a teenage girl has died of an apparent drug overdose. An autopsy reveals that both drugs and an excessive use of magic contributed to her death, prompting Peter and his colleague Sahra Guleed to investigate further. Their inquiry uncovers a wide-ranging conspiracy involving several magical factions, including witches, visiting American wizards, and London's supernatural demi-monde, all competing to locate a lost manuscript attributed to Isaac Newton that is rumored to hold secrets of alchemy and immortality. As the search for the manuscript intensifies, Peter must also manage his relationship with the immortal Beverley Brook while the investigation edges him closer to his and Nightingale's longtime enemy, the Faceless Man.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
