Synopsis

The Harp of Kings, the first book in Juliet Marillier's Warrior Bards series, follows eighteen-year-old Liobhan, a gifted singer and whistle player who is training on Swan Island to earn a place in its elite warrior band. While still a candidate rather than a full member, she and her brother are sent undercover, posing as traveling musicians, on a mission to recover an ancient ceremonial harp needed for an approaching royal coronation. As Liobhan makes her way through the royal court in this guise, she encounters scheming courtiers and secretive druids, and begins to suspect that supernatural forces beyond ordinary politics are shaping events around the missing harp. Her assignment increasingly forces her to weigh her own ambitions on Swan Island against doing what she believes is right.

Notes

  • From the series record (Warrior Bards): Marillier's most recent completed trilogy, set in early-medieval Erin (Ireland) -- a separate world/cast from Sevenwaters despite the shared broad setting-region, per independent research (no crossover characters or continuity link found).
