Synopsis
The Hidden Palace is the sequel to The Golem and the Jinni, reuniting the golem Chava and the jinni Ahmad in New York City in the early twentieth century as their friendship, and the secret of their true natures, continues to shape their lives. Spanning roughly fifteen years across the tenements, workshops and institutions of the Lower East Side, the novel widens its view to a larger cast drawn from the neighborhood's Jewish and Arab immigrant communities, following their efforts to adapt and survive amid the pressures of a rapidly changing city. Chava and Ahmad, shaped by very different instincts and philosophies, must decide what kind of relationship they can sustain and what place, if any, two inhuman beings can carve out for themselves among humans who will never fully know what they are.
