Synopsis
The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms is a 2010 fantasy novel by N. K. Jemisin, the first book of The Inheritance Trilogy. Yeine Darr, an outcast from the barbarian northern nation of Darr, is summoned to the floating city of Sky after her mother's mysterious death and is shockingly named an heiress to the ruling Arameri family's throne by her grandfather, the family's ailing patriarch Dekarta. She soon learns she has been named alongside two other cousins, Scimina and the embittered Relad, setting up a three-way succession contest in which only one heir can ultimately prevail. Isolated and distrusted as a half-Darre outsider within the palace, Yeine must navigate treacherous court politics and forge uneasy alliances, including with the enslaved gods bound in service to the Arameri, most notably the chaotic Nahadoth, while trying to uncover the truth behind her mother's death.
