Synopsis
The ninth novel opens with Sandman Slim stranded in Tenebrae, a desolate realm for the lost dead, after an attempt to force open the gates of Heaven goes wrong and destabilizes the structure of the afterlife itself. Cut off from his usual routes home, Stark falls in with a caravan of the damned led by a ruthless criminal boss, trading his fighting skills for safe passage across Tenebrae's wastes. The journey brings him up against vicious bounty hunters, vengeful angels with their own grievances against him, and enemies who approach with friendly smiles while working to keep him trapped in this desolate land indefinitely. Stark has to find allies among the caravan's damned travelers and figure out a way back to the living world before Tenebrae's dangers, or its despair, wear him down for good.

Notes
- From the series record (Sandman Slim): Complete 12-novel urban-fantasy sequence (2009-2021) following James Stark, a magician who escaped an eleven-year exile in Hell to hunt down the people who murdered his girlfriend and sent him there, working cases across a supernatural Los Angeles. "Devil in the Dollhouse" (2012), a novella slotting between books 3 and 4, is kept out of Core as companion material, not one of the twelve main-sequence novels.
