Synopsis
In the tenth novel, James Stark is only partly restored to life after the previous book's events and is desperate to complete the journey back to being fully alive. That desperation leads him to accept a dangerous bargain from an evil faction leader, who promises Stark full resurrection in exchange for stopping a catastrophic ritual that threatens to devastate Los Angeles and for retrieving a set of scattered mystical artifacts tied to that ritual. The mission takes Stark across the city's supernatural underworld, forcing him to rely on old allies while facing betrayal from people close to him along the way. Balancing the temptation of the deal against the risk of being used as a pawn in someone else's larger scheme, Stark has to weigh how much of himself he is willing to compromise in order to fully return to the world of the living.

Notes
- From the series record (Sandman Slim): Complete 12-novel urban-fantasy sequence (2009-2021) following James Stark, a magician who escaped an eleven-year exile in Hell to hunt down the people who murdered his girlfriend and sent him there, working cases across a supernatural Los Angeles. "Devil in the Dollhouse" (2012), a novella slotting between books 3 and 4, is kept out of Core as companion material, not one of the twelve main-sequence novels.
