Synopsis
In the eleventh novel, James Stark is back in Los Angeles, still adjusting to life after his recent resurrection from Hell, when he becomes romantically involved with a woman named Janet even as he takes on an investigation into a string of murderous ghosts haunting the Little Cairo district. What begins as a straightforward haunting case leads Stark to uncover a decades-old mystery surrounding the unsolved murder of a Hollywood actor, a case with unexpected ties to a long-running conflict among angels. As Stark digs deeper, he finds that resolving the actor's death may be the key to settling that older angelic dispute, pulling him once again into business well above his usual monster-hunting pay grade while he tries to build something like a normal relationship with Janet on the side.

Notes
- From the series record (Sandman Slim): Complete 12-novel urban-fantasy sequence (2009-2021) following James Stark, a magician who escaped an eleven-year exile in Hell to hunt down the people who murdered his girlfriend and sent him there, working cases across a supernatural Los Angeles. "Devil in the Dollhouse" (2012), a novella slotting between books 3 and 4, is kept out of Core as companion material, not one of the twelve main-sequence novels.
