Synopsis

The city of Mandrigyn has been conquered by Altiokis, a wizard-king, tyrant and apparent immortal, and its men are slaves in the foul mines beneath his citadel. A woman named Sheera comes to the mercenary captain Sun Wolf with a commission he refuses: to train the women of Mandrigyn, who in a sheltered and unliberated society have quietly taken over the city's businesses, to fight, free their men and overthrow the wizard. Sheera's answer is to poison him with anzid, for which only the ladies have the antidote, and carry him to Mandrigyn, where the man who routinely buys and keeps teenage concubines must make soldiers of the city's wives and daughters. Meanwhile Starhawk, his second-in-command, sets out to find him, and begins to learn lessons of her own about the burghers and merchants she has always treated as sword-fodder.

Notes

  • From the series record (Sun Wolf and Starhawk): Barbara Hambly's sword-and-sorcery trilogy of Sun Wolf, a mercenary captain who discovers he has the power of magic and no one to teach him, and Starhawk, his second-in-command: a war against a wizard-king, a search for a teacher, and a curse on his old company. Four self-published sequel novellas (2015) continue the pair's story.
