Synopsis

Nine months after the events of The Ladies of Mandrigyn, Sun Wolf, who has learned that he carries the power of magic without any training in its use, and Starhawk arrive in the southern desert kingdom of Wenshar, where he seeks instruction from the professed sorceress Kaletha. The two clash over her methods, and he doubts her abilities, agreeing only to a week's trial while he takes service with King Osgard at the fortress of Tandieras. There a series of supernatural murders begins, and the signs of dark forces at work lead Sun Wolf and Starhawk to the abandoned desert city of old Wenshar and to the ancient books of magic written by the Witches of Wenshar, which can be used to summon demons, and which Kaletha possesses. Escaping the fortress with the help of the king's children, they must find the real summoner before the demons find them.

Notes

  • From the series record (Sun Wolf and Starhawk): Barbara Hambly's sword-and-sorcery trilogy of Sun Wolf, a mercenary captain who discovers he has the power of magic and no one to teach him, and Starhawk, his second-in-command: a war against a wizard-king, a search for a teacher, and a curse on his old company. Four self-published sequel novellas (2015) continue the pair's story.
