Synopsis
Byx is the youngest member of her pack of dairnes, a mythical doglike species hunted nearly to extinction in the war-torn kingdom of Nedarra. When her pack is killed, she believes she is the last of her kind. Rather than give up, she sets out to find a safe place and to test whether the legends of other, hidden dairnes are true. Along the way she gathers a group of allies who become a kind of family. Together they uncover a secret that threatens their entire world. The book is the first in a middle-grade animal fantasy trilogy by Katherine Applegate, and it follows Byx's journey across a land divided by old rivalries, shifting alliances and the constant danger of capture.
