Synopsis
In post-Roman Britain, Magnus Succatus Patricius, a hot-headed young priest, is sent to preach to the Picts of the north. He is beaten and left to die by one tribe, then rescued by the Prydn, a small people the Picts call faerie. He becomes known among them as Padrec. Their queen, Dorelei, is central to the story. His faith is tested by a betrayal by fellow Christians, while the Prydn, who are dying out and fear iron, choose to hold to their own gods. They fight as mercenaries in a southern war for the promise of land, and then go in search of a legendary faerie hoard and the paradise of Tir-Nan-Og.
