Synopsis

On the eve of his knighthood, sixteen-year-old squire Tiuri is standing the traditional all-night vigil in a chapel in the kingdom of Dagonaut when he hears a desperate voice pleading through the door. Breaking with tradition, he steps outside and is given a sealed letter by an old stranger, who asks him to carry it to a wounded knight waiting at a nearby forest inn. Finding the knight dying, Tiuri is charged with carrying the letter onward, across the mountains, to King Unauwen in the kingdom to the west, on a mission the dying man insists is of the greatest importance. Pursued by armed riders in red and other mysterious enemies, and unable to tell who can be trusted, Tiuri sets out across hostile territory to complete a mission on which, he comes to understand, the fate of a kingdom depends.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Letter for the King): Tonke Dragt's original two-book duology (De brief voor de koning, 1962; De geheimen van het Wilde Woud, 1965), a Dutch chivalric quest classic following the young squire Tiuri. Both volumes have confirmed English translations (Laura Watkinson, Pushkin Press).
