Synopsis

Some time after the events of the earlier volume The Letter for the King, the newly knighted Sir Tiuri and his squire Piak arrange to meet their friend Sir Ristridin at his castle in spring. When Ristridin fails to arrive, having gone missing during an expedition into the vast and little-understood Wild Wood, Tiuri and Piak set out with other knights to find him. Their search leads them into the forest itself, where they encounter the enigmatic Knight with the Black Shield and gather signs that Ristridin met with serious danger. As they press further into the Wild Wood, they uncover hints of a looming threat from the neighboring kingdom of Deltaland and of a wider plot connected to the Prince of Eviellan, drawing Tiuri into events far larger than a simple search for a missing friend.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Letter for the King): Tonke Dragt's original two-book duology (De brief voor de koning, 1962; De geheimen van het Wilde Woud, 1965), a Dutch chivalric quest classic following the young squire Tiuri. Both volumes have confirmed English translations (Laura Watkinson, Pushkin Press).
