Synopsis

Picking up the journey of Jalan, Snorri, and their companion Tuttugu, this second novel of the sequel trilogy follows the trio as they carry a magical artifact called Loki's Key across the Broken Empire, each with a different reason for continuing on. Snorri remains fixed on reaching Death's Door in hopes of bringing his lost family back, while Jalan, true to form, mainly wants to make it home to Red March in one piece. Their path draws in new allies, including the witch Kara, and puts them in the sights of the Dead King's forces, who want the key for themselves, along with the enigmatic figure known as the Blue Lady, whose interest in the group's quest only becomes clearer as their journey continues.

Awards (verified)

  • David Gemmell Legend Award, 2016: won

Notes

  • From the series record (The Red Queen's War): Prince Jalan Kendeth and the Viking Snorri (2014-2016), set in the same world and the same years as The Broken Empire trilogy, a concurrent companion narrative, not a sequel. Author-confirmed same world and either-order readability. Classified Core alongside The Broken Empire per the Riftwar/First Empire precedent for mainline companion sub-series.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
