Synopsis

Concluding the sequel trilogy, this novel finds Jalan Kendeth freshly returned from a harrowing detour through Hell alongside Snorri, wanting nothing more than to retreat back into the comfortable, indulgent life he has always preferred. Reality will not let him, however, since the Wheel of Osheim, a force capable of tearing apart the fabric of the world itself, is spinning ever faster, and armies of undead horrors are already spilling out across the crumbling territories of the Broken Empire as a result. Pulled reluctantly into a quest to stop the Wheel before it destroys everything, Jalan is driven less by any newfound heroism than by loyalty to Snorri and an unwillingness to abandon him, even as he privately doubts whether a world seemingly bent on its own destruction is worth the effort of saving.

Awards (verified)

  • David Gemmell Legend Award, 2017: nominated

Notes

  • From the series record (The Red Queen's War): Prince Jalan Kendeth and the Viking Snorri (2014-2016), set in the same world and the same years as The Broken Empire trilogy, a concurrent companion narrative, not a sequel. Author-confirmed same world and either-order readability. Classified Core alongside The Broken Empire per the Riftwar/First Empire precedent for mainline companion sub-series.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series The Red Queen's War: position 3 of 3: previous The Liar's Key (2015)
