Synopsis
The Library at Mount Char, Scott Hawkins's debut novel, follows Carolyn, one of twelve children adopted decades earlier by a godlike, effectively immortal man the siblings call Father, who raised them in isolation and trained each of them in a distinct, terrible discipline drawn from volumes housed in his vast personal library. When Father abruptly disappears, apparently killed, the siblings find themselves cut off from the library itself, blocked by a mysterious security measure that prevents anyone from entering to search for him or to reclaim the knowledge inside. Carolyn enlists a small-time burglar named Steve Hodgson to help her break into a nearby house connected to Father's disappearance, an act that quickly draws government attention and pits Carolyn against her own siblings as each pursues Father's absence, and the library's future, according to their own designs.
