The Library at Mount Char (2015) is Scott Hawkins's standalone dark fantasy/fantasy-horror debut novel. Twelve children were adopted, decades earlier, by a godlike figure known only as Father, each raised to master one discipline of reality-altering knowledge in his vast, otherworldly library; when Father disappears, his adopted daughter Carolyn manipulates events on contemporary Earth, working against the American government, her own siblings, and eventually cosmic-scale consequences, to keep control of the library and what it holds. The novel mixes surreal, apocalyptic violence with dark humor and resists easy genre classification, sitting somewhere between thriller and speculative fiction.
