Synopsis
The Lord of Castle Black continues the Viscount of Adrilankha trilogy after the recovery of the Imperial Orb, as Morrolan sets about building his ancestral stronghold, Castle Black, while the newly restored Empire faces continued military pressure from the warlord Kana's forces. Piro, Khaavren's son, falls in love with Ibronka, a woman from a rival House, and their relationship strains family loyalties and runs up against cultural taboos that complicate the wider political situation. Khaavren and his old companions remain central to the unfolding events, working alongside the younger generation, including Piro and Ibronka, to hold the fragile Empire together against Kana's growing coalition of enemies. As personal relationships and political alliances become increasingly entangled, the group must balance the demands of the ongoing military threat with the more private conflicts unfolding among its own members.
Where it sits
- Universe: Dragaera
- Series: The Khaavren Romances core; position 4 of 6 in the series' recorded order
- Author: Steven Brust
Notes
- From the series record (The Khaavren Romances): 6 novels (1991-2020), narrated in-world by the fictional historian 'Paarfi of Roundwood' in a deliberately florid Dumas-pastiche style, set centuries before the Vlad Taltos sequence. Books 3-5 form 'The Viscount of Adrilankha' trilogy within the sequence. Publication order equals internal chronological order throughout (no divergence, unlike the Vlad Taltos sequence).
Neighbouring works
Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings, but they resolve to the exact same sequence for this book, so one combined line is shown instead of two identical ones.
- Reading order, within the series The Khaavren Romances: position 4 of 6: previous The Paths of the Dead (2002) · next Sethra Lavode (2004)
