Synopsis
The Magician King, published by Lev Grossman in 2011, follows Quentin Coldwater and his companions after they have become kings and queens of the magical land of Fillory, where the daily grind of governing has replaced the wonder Quentin once hoped ruling would bring. Restless under the weight of royal boredom and responsibility, Quentin and fellow monarch Julia set out on what starts as a minor errand, collecting overdue taxes from Fillory's outer islands, only to stumble on a golden key that unexpectedly pulls them back into the real world. Interwoven with this quest is Julia's own story, tracing how she built a secret, self-taught magical education outside Brakebills after failing to gain admission in the first book, a parallel path that has left her profoundly changed by the time the two storylines converge.
